112 Camshaft position sensor.

Evening all. Purchased some diagnostic equipment last week and hooked it up to my car for the first time. Only 1 error it's coming up with and it's 112 Camshaft position sensor. I was using DIS for this as I couldn't seem to get INPA working.

Anyway, suggestions on the error? It seemed to go away once heated up actually.

Engine does seem to run a bit rich when first started up and there's liquid from the exhaust but it's not been used in anger for a long long time.

ah, same one as mine had, its your cam sensor, i brought a cheap ebay replacement and has been fine ever since. this is why your motor is - as you say lumpy, it doesn't do it any harm but the sensor is used by the ecu to determine cam position or rather as posted in the other thread errr phasing. they never seem to be permanent failures just intermittent but yes it does make your motor lumpy and rich running. its an easy and cheap fix on the M44 engine, took me about 20 min (im assuming yours is an M44 simply because of you avatar).

i read somewhere that sometimes you can get away with just giving them a clean, mine wasn't dirty though so i swapped it.

Morning! Yes it's the engine in the avatar. I'll get one ordered this week then and try swapping it over. Do you have a link to the procedure for swapping it at all?

There's defo a problem with it though. I've just had a quick look at the sensor, literally just moved the cable it's attached to and the engine cut out.

yep thats the one, though if i remember correctly you dont have to remove as much as this guy removes, i think you can get to the plug with everything still attached then it was just a case of lifting the part he removes just to give you room to extract the cable, im sure i left it all in place.

Ok. Been out today and took the sensor off in preparation for the new one coming. I was getting confused between that one and the one in this picture. Which sensor is this?

if it is cutting out with the crankshaft sensor, try just swapping that one first, then retest the car and see if the error comes back.

If, when you move the cable on the crankshaft sensor the engine cuts out, change that one first.

Swapped the crankshaft sensor today, doesn't cut out when I move the cable now but the camshaft sensor fault is still listed. Will swap that out next week and see what happens.

if you hadnt changed the crank sensor it was only a matter of time till it failed. well spotted.
