Gremlins....you know the electrical type! Here's me thinking it was just Japanese cars that had dodgy wiring!!!

Anyway, busy morning with refitting alloys, seats back in (still fighting with door cards) and stereo almost fitted.

All going well with stereo except after 5 secs or so no sound. Unplug connector, plug it back in....sound...then no sound again. I've messed about with the connecting blocks/wiring when attached but makes no difference.

Tried two different stereos. Same situation. So it's the car. But WTF?!!!! Anyone???

Ideally in the next 30 mins before wife home and car tinkering is over?!!!!!!

Japanese cars have dodgy electrics? You've never had any Alfa Romeos, have you?
They are just bad full stop. Never had one, and don't plan to.

My imported rx7 came across with like a billion gadgets connected, loads of additional wiring...What a job I had trying to find the dodgy earth lol.

Anybody help with this issue?

Glad people like you say such things about Alfa's :), keeps the price down for the rest of us!
Never had problems in all the years I have had my Alfa and now its on 90k but my BMW? had that a year and have a list as long as my arm of jobs to do! and lets not talk about rust..... the Alfa has non where as the Z3 well lets just say its a work in progress :p

TBH though its matters not what car you have but how you look after it, I have done all the known problem points on the Alfa like the electrics that I went over all the exposed plugs and cleaned them then spayed silicone spray in them then sealed them with silicone and I have already done that with a lot of the Z3 loom, also things like the Z3 grommet for the aerial was changed before it leaked and just going over things and sorting them before they become a problem :)
one of my next jobs on the list for the Z3 is the VANOS but I will be doing everything else on my way in there like the water pump ect, I know my way of doings gets expensive but for me piece of mind has a high value :).

If it was me I'd connect the stereo to a constant live and be done with it, I have a feeling there is a timer so that the radio or amp will stay on a few seconds after the power is cut then turn off on some BMW's now I'm not sure where I read this or If it can be turned off in the ecu or something, Sorry I cant help anymore than that but it may jolt someone else's memory :)

when you say "no sound", does this mean that the display is still lit up and controls functioning? or is the unit completely dead?

Key ignition, car running, stereo all lit up and reading media and/or on a radio station, sound can be heard....then no sound. Switch off stereo using the standby button, put it back on.....sound again for a few seconds.....then no sound...

Tried with two different stereos.

on drawing 6510.1 in the troubleshooting manual, there is a "mute" wire shown connected to the head unit. coloured white/brown

This is used with phones and sat navs. I think it mutes when connected to ground. Check it is disconnected and insulated.

It's not connected to anything. Goes into the main harness belonging to the car, but on the additional harness it connects to nothing.

I've checked and double checked all connections. There is a click sound before silence. Really don't want to use a audio place.......that spend could be used on new toys! Balls!!!

just had a look and you may have a amp, the stock headunit therefore may have a power on wire to turn on the amp when the head unit comes on and this may not be connected on the aftermarket system :)

it will help if you can establish whether yours has the amp. there may be two units mounted in the boot.

try putting you VIN into realoem.com and see if it shows which option was factory fitted.
