Check the boot loom wiring as it enters the boot lid, it's common for it to fray and cause problems. You need to pull back the grommet and look at the cable as far inside as you can.

Is yours a facelift or pre facelift car?

If you take the long black plastic off inside the boot you should be able to access brake light wiring connectors. You can then check for voltage using multimeter or test lamp when pedal depressed/ignition on. If nothing there then go back to loom as Gary suggests.

Mine didn't work either and ended up with all of corrosion in the unit (replaced), several blown bulbs (replaced), perished rubber gasket (replaced) and frayed wires (amateur wiring specialist employed - me)...... Oh the joys of owning old cars. It is a little costly although Sopers of Lincoln offered a decent discount on the parts to members on here.

Every time I pull up near a window I deliberately brake just to see the it working in the reflection. Simple pleasures...
