This month's Practical Classic Magazine has a review 10 sub 5k roadsters from late 90s early 2000s. The z3 gets a good write up and thinks they will increase in value.seems they are coming round to our way of thinking.

Thanks for posting. The autotrader today has 141 Z3's for sale while there are 921 Z4's not including M models. Similar number on Ebay. Judging by the number of Z3's being broken these numbers will reduce over the next few years so try to hold onto your cars.

Great write-up, there seem to be more and more, which is nice :) Personally I couldn't give two hoots about appreciation as she's a keeper, the down side will be (over time) that peeps wanting to get into his marked may be out priced :( won't be for a while yet less the ///M and ///M Coupe

When you look at the price of classic sports cars, even decent MG midgets and Spitfires seem to be in the £5K to £10K band now (exceptional ones even more). Good MGBs seem to be circa £10K to £15K and TR6s £20K plus. Z3s seem on the whole significantly less than these prices and are far more usable and far better built. Much more supply than demand for Z3s at the moment (excepting M versions) but the Z3s day will come.:)

yep and even less under 50,000 buy the best you can now and keep hold I would say as its a rare breed said it before but you cant buy cars like this anymore small roadster with a six cyl upfront , even starter Porsche is now a flat 4 not a 6

But the Porsche flat 4 turbo is faster than a flat 6  doesn't sound as good mind but that's being worked on.
But in general classic cars are now silly money the Zed is probably only one of the affordable ones to buy if on a budget.
The cars we have sold in past have now gone through the roof in the last couple of years.

Not the direct comparison of the day (Zed 3 2.8), 2.5 Boxster, TT225 all 0-60mph of 6.7 seconds with the SLK at 7.1 seconds. The BMW Z3 has superior torque so does better in real world driving at in-gear speeds. Oh, sounds and looks better IMHO :)

The latest generation Boxsters have moved the game on the difference is night and day.
Agree the first 2.5 was not very quick but road holding is superior imho :)
But a 2.5 against bigger engine models would be unfair comparison.
But i bought my 20 year old classic to cruise not to rag it. A 1.9 is not fast anyway it's addiquate for today's roads. I treat it with a level of respect she's an old girl.:p
You can have just as much fun on twisty bits at 50 as opposed to much higher speeds and more challenging.
But again only my opinion. :)

Yup, agreed, however, the Boxster 2.5 was the direct competitor of the day :) my sister has the 3.4 Boxster, the experts tell us it's a bit better than the Z4 ///M but I'd rather sacrifice a bit of performance and engineering for looks. :)

Agree about some early looks but the 981 Boxster has nailed it. It looks meaner more agressive more road presents imho :) the 981 is Boxster in name only the gap between previous models is night and day and the 981 Spyder wow dream car 3.8 and looks.
But i think we have gone off topic but all very interesting.
Let's hope the Zed does become and appreciated as a real classic status car.
Might reclaim some of the money i have spent on it. ;)

I would love to see how the Z3 would have evolved if it were still in production today. I'm thinking 4ltr V8 growler

Not forgetting that a Boxster is a poor mans porker, as for the Gayman!:)

The article did go on to say that the boxster shouldn't be thought of as a poor man's Porsche but is a very competent car in it's own right, a bit like the Z3 was maligned when it first came out.

All have good points and even rated the Street Ka as a usable cheap way into roadsters. The baby Merc SLK had a good summary but the article still came down in favour of the MkII MX5

The MK2 MX5 although a great driving car is usually riddled with rust. The chassis rails at the front rust very badly not to mention the sills. My MK2 even had a hole in the floor. Stick to the Z3 .
