afternoon all, i hope we are all ready for the big man coming??

Stuck at work so thought id proof my roof some more and check out my tyres.
Bought the z3 about 4 months ago and only just noticed the random tyre types and sizes......

on the rear i have 245/40/ zr17 95 w xl (alpha?)

and on the front i have:
left side 225/45/ r17 91 y (contisport)
right side the same but speed rating 91w (bridgstone potenza)

I suppose I'm looking to find out what the best size and make for the whole car would be instead of a rondo size. shouldn't the front and rear be tha same size?

i know its probably a complete noob question but for the past 6 years iv had my tyres taken care of for me.

Your Tyre sizes are fine, most BMW have staggered rear to fronts. Tyre types, Falken 452's or Maxxis MA Z1's

@Derek as stated, staggered is fine, however, it's best practice to have the same make all round and defo have the same type on each axle.

Same make all round can get very interesting.
Not all tyres are available in the two sizes required.

I have falken 452's all round on mine. Good tyres for the money. Think they've been superseded now with 453's.

By the way the xl on the side wall means extra load, just in case you didn't know. As the side walls get shorter they are reinforced for extra load carrying.

never really looked at mine (except condition checking), mine are staggered too (the oem wheels were not) even though i have never really checked im fairly confident my rears are a different make to the front, but weather there the same on both wheels errr duno. drives fine though

It will drive fine up to hopefully close the limit or when something unsettles the car - all of a sudden, you've potentially got different performance on each side the car. Two different tyres may be constructed slightly differently. 99.99% of the time it won't matter. That 0.01% of the time is when you actually need consistent performance. You might just end up in the green stuff when you didn't expect to. Not to be recommended and not worth the risk in my book.

Many cars that come for M.O.T. have 4 different Siamese slippers one them, but so long as they're are the same size and profile on each axle then it's acceptable, speed rating is not a testable item, so it they were available you could even run a T rated tyre alongside a Y rated one in the same size. How daft is that? And also one with 1.6mm of tread alongside one with 7.5mm of tread.
