Soft top . What is the point of the switch .?

Hi everybody. Am about to replace the microswitch on the 2.8 .soft top . It appears to have been replaced sometime in the longtime past as it is not the original in place.However I'm thinking is there any point. Does it serve any useful purpose. I've temporarily bridged the wires and it works fine. Any thoughts?

It stops the roof being opened without pushing up initially - if you didnt start the process it would bend the roof
