Hi Peeps,

I am seriously considering the purchase of a 1998 Z3M as an investment and I thought who better to advise me that you lot hence the post.

The car seems to be in immaculate condition, is Imola red and has done 89,000 miles.

I know that these cars are fast becoming very sort after and are very desirable but I have no idea of current or likely future values - any input would be welcome.

Here's a couple of photos of the car in question ...

Depends on how much money you need to make for it to be worthwhile to you.

i think you could probably get away with buying one, driving one and still being cost neutral if you sold in 5 years etc

Thanks @5harp3y

Hopefully it doesn't need much spending on it and in order to maximise any possible returns on this beautiful car, I wouldn't want to increase the mileage too much. Not quite sure if I would be able to resist driving it maybe once in a while though lol

Another thing to consider is "will they rise any more In price" They defiantly wont go down.

If I was holding the purse strings I would buy it. The Imola is a very desirable colour.

It only an investment if it's less than £10k and less than 50k miles with FSH, all MOTs, all tax discs, all receipts (incl the ones for future storage). You will need to have it inspected and confirmed to be PERFECT.

For maximum investment return, you will need to have free access to a storage facility that will keep it free from the environment. You will need to be able to insure it for peanuts, or be rich enough to be able to take the hit of not insuring it. You will keep it SORN'd and not drive (enjoy) it. Ownership is not free, unless you are rich already.

There are much better investments that historically will rise at a more predictable rate.

These cars have had their blip. The financially astute will be getting out of the M Roadster market at the moment, not getting into it. Jumping on a financial bandwagon is the way fools and their money are parted.

If you want to invest in a car, invest in a desirable car that was new (as in new model) in 2000-2005 - an unmolested E46 M3, perhaps. If you can find an unmolested one, they are still a lot of car for the money - which is what you want.

Not sure you would be able to find a Z3M with less than 50k miles for less than 10k Pingu but if you do, please let me know !!! Sensible advice though, thank you.

Interesting that you say that investors will be getting out of the M Roadster market - I see it not only as a beautiful car but as an appreciating classic of the future, assuming that you can find the right example.

Dave

PS: I am rich

Here's the thing, and I have said this before. It looks fantastic, but if you are going to buy it check if the bushes and suspension are all original, IMO if they are chances are they will all need changing at that age/mileage if they have been done, happy days. I am on my 2nd ///M both similar miles and both were totally original, the bushes on both were perished and the shocks were tired as were the ball joints. You just cant get away from the fact these cars are nearing 20 years old, parts wear out and perish, its an age thing not a mileage thing. Be prepared to spend 2k plus getting the mechanical to be as good as the appearance.

Also obviously check the Vanos

Dave, imola red is by far the best colour in my opinion and one if not the rarest apart from the odd individual colour. It looks a beautiful car and one I would be proud to own and use on a very rare occasion to keep nice.
I cannot give you a in-depth answer but my point of view would be if you think it is the right money for you to buy it and your happy to store it and look at it occasionally then get your cheque book out.
It will never make you rich but I'm sure in time you will see a percentage on your investment. :)

Thanks Dave - I love this colour on the M Roadster and to be fair to the guy selling it, he is a technician for a professional racing outfit whom I have known for a long time so I can be pretty confident that he knows a thing or two. It has had two owners from new, comes with lots of lovely documentation and aside from the rear shocks (which he is replacing), all seems to be intact and correct.

I am old enough to know that this isn't going to make me as rich as you :) just exploring options at the moment and fancied something else to invest in apart from shaky stock markets and poor return bank accounts. Whether the M Roadster is the car for me is yet to be decided but we will see.

Off to look at it next weekend and I will keep my options open - never was one for spending money lol.
