Hi,I think I'm at the end of the road with my 3G EWS alarm (1997 1.9), while trying to re-code a new fob I took off the corner off the control unit (the remote part) trying to get a better view of the "hidden" programming switch this exposed a row of 8 pins, now that's a big mistake, DON'T DO IT , the alarm activated and the central locking kicked in.I have spent a couple of days working through the procedure below:-

" 1) Prise out the rubber bung from the remote receiver.
2) Insert a thin screwdriver into the hole and flick the coding switch to the right to set the remote receiver into “program” mode.
3) Press the red button once on each remote (max 4 remotes).
4) Flick the coding switch back to the left and replace the rubber bung.Your fobs should now work.

If there still seems to be a problem prise the remote receiver off the control unit to reset it. When you replace it (be careful you don’t bend the pins) the central locking should close & open. Re-code your fob as in steps 1 to 4.

If this doesn't work fully unplug the module, wait a minute, then reconnect it and Re-code your fob as in steps 1 to 4.

Still no joy? Prise the remote receiver off, short pins 1 & 6, then pins 1 & 8, reconnect the receiver, then Re-code your fob as in steps 1 to 4.

Finally, if all else fails prise the remote receiver off, short all the pins in the module, then Re-code your fob as in steps 1 to 4.

If that doesn't work then you need a new receiver. "

I Got nowhere the alarm is activated and I cant get it to switch off,so any help from here would be much appreciated, failing any help from you guys are my options now, 1/professional help to reset the system, 2/ professional help to disarm the system 3/ has anyone any advice on replacing it with an aftermarket alarm and 4/ a BIG hammer.

@jonco @Aceman - any ideas on this one?
@joepig and I have been in conversation on this but we are now stuck. I accidentally unplugged the same transmitter box when I was doing mine but had the battery disconnected so I think that's why I got away with it. He may have popped the control unit - @spurs fan in a coupe do you have any spare units from a breaking project.
Roy found the procedure he has quoted from above on a bimmer forum thread. The shorting of the pins to reset was a new one on me but it may be something others know about ( @Aceman , @Brian H and @Brian4 spring to mind).

the 3G EWS boxes are very popular through eBay buyers when I list a 'breaking car', some mechanics even come over and take the EWS (behind the glove box usually), the 'brain' under bonnet near driver's side front suspension turret and the steering wheel end electronics on the steering column.

I do have a couple of these boxes somewhere I think, not sure if they would be of any use, but might be worth a try.

and to "spurs fan in a coupe" thanks it's probably to easy to think that just changing ews units is a simple solution , just unplugging one and plugging another in and recoding the fobs would be an easy job,do you know if it's been done

Thank you everyone for taking the time to reply,Problem now resolved by having the whole alarm removed,it took the electrician about an hour and cost me £50,so no more problems.I know I have lost the remote central locking but it still works on the key and I have lost the flashing led alarm light but I can live without these.I asked about if an aftermarket alarm system could still be installed but the electrician said he wouldn't bother as the cars keys are chipped and the car can't be started without them.As I never leave it unattended I may or may not have one fitted.
Again thank you for your support

You could fit an after market central locking easily enough mate. I fitted it on my Eunos and it took about 5 hrs.

I just bought a kit off eBay for a 4 door car mate. I used one of the servo's to operate a remote boot opener from a button switch I mounted on the console. When you get the kit you can lay it all out on the garage floor and connect it up together and adding a battery you can make sure it all works before actually fitting anything.:)

@joepig the mighty two man two fan swing wing angel of death is my favourite fast jet of all time. Easy to gain entry, pin the seats, shut down, make the weapons safe and get the Jockey and WSOP out.:)
