BMW Z3 3.0 - Fiona

Great precise write up Paul! Engine bay looks better without that lump of junk there.

Tony.
@t-tony
Tony have you done this to your Z4 or do you have any idea if it can be removed from the Z4s without any side effects?

Ah OK fitted to the Alpina, just thought it was across the board

Just a little update.

Noticed my mpg dropping off over recent months and not all due to the Basingstoke Whacky Races either..

So, I did some research and read about the ‘disa’ starting to stick could lead to fuel issues. Having noticed my rev’s not dropping as quick too, also another failing ‘disa’ issue. I decided to contact my buddy Nick Jupp, replacement disa arrived next day from an E46 330. Result. New gasket seal ordered from an eBay seller after @Lee reported a good result on Sam’s 2.2 using it. All arrived and then the stripping out, easy torx t40 screws and one connector. Existing disa seemed very dirty and slow to close compared to the replacement. Took some time to cut out the old rubber bmw seal so I could get a nice snug fit. All sorted and back in, even if I did loose one screw on the drive.. lucky I had a spare available to carry on.

Photos below show the old disa and the new disa with the red silicone seal in place. After today’s little South Downs Run, I can report that little Fi, seems like a new car. Quicker to respond and the revs drop nicely again too. So if you log your mpg and notice a drop, think about servicing your zed in more detail. It might save you a disa failure and other issues.

Replacement seal, and disa unit.

FI back to lovely responsive driving. Happy days.

Well a visit to zedshed west was had today to sort out the sill covers which were starting to show signs of rust.

Helped by @Nodzed , @Mr C and a visit by @mid life crisis who just came to increase the banter. Can not thank Niall enough for his help doing this. I would consider that a lot of people check the sills and consider a little preventative maintenance.

A few of the photographs are self explanatory below. Of note was the bubbling in the centre of the drivers sill which turned out to be just the paint holding the metal together. Caught just in time.

Are you going to put new sills on or did you refurb the old ones ?

Inner sills cleaned up painted and protected lots of waxoyl and replacement outers good for a few years. If you haven't had yours off you need too.

I haven't had the sills off either of my zeds. The silver zeds sills have a bit of bubbling so they're going to need attention. The black zed has pretty good bodywork although the paint needs an uplift. The sills look quite good but you're right, I should take the sill covers off and have a good look

The wings and sill covers are this winters project for me. I'd be happy to buy and good set with no rust if anyone has any for a 2.8/3.0. Otherwise it'll be biting the bullet and going to the stealers.
What sort of time did it take to strip Paul @pgunter??

@Grumps well if you allow for extra coffee and banter. We had them off in about two hours. You need extra pairs of hands to make the job flow too. Best thing too is to look at the replacement sill you are using to work out where the bolts are.

Much easier up in the air too.

Good work at the West Zed Shed:thumbsup:. hmmm may have to look at the 3.0. Something else on the list:(

Won't have the luxury of "in the air" but will have the luxury of extra hands and experience as Tony has offered to do it at his with me bless him :)
