As mentioned above I have a couple of genuine (new) KIA tyre pumps and tyre seal gunk for sale if anyone is interested, i can post photos at the weekend.

I have used Z3 spare wheels, to get me home, I wouldn't go far or fast!

When did the vosa change that rule ? Because had my Discovery fail because tyre tread was not legal and was told that if it's there it can be used which because of tread depth would make it elegal to use, hence it failed.
Its been that way for a while.
If you go to post #30 i have posted the section from the current test manual only the road wheels are testable spares advise only obviously if you fit it it then becomes a fail ( but also that wheel no longer classed as spare its now a roadwheel)
I failed a corsa this afternoon for having spare fitted
The car had 175/65/14 fitted to both rear a 175/ 70/14 on drivers front and the spare on the passenger front 155/80/13 (the other 14 inch wheel was not in the car ) so failed for 2 different size tyres across an axle

You learn some thing new every day thanks for clearing that up. I did check myself on the web. What I can't understand then is why my diso failed on the spare for being under minimum limit last year.

The thing that made me take my spare wheel out was the fact that the only place to put your punctured wheel is on the passenger seat, and that was with 17s I've now got 18s, don't know if a rear would fit? but it would make a mess and if you've got a passenger!! just wouldn't work. Mines gathering dust on a shelf in the garage and a can of gunk in the boot plus the old fashioned puncture repair kit with bits of rubber and hook tools for bigger holes (have used that)
On another note has anybody used the alloy jack supplied?!! Well dodgy!!

I've removed my spare tyre and the tyre rack with out much issues. The only slight problem was that the hinge nuts were rusty and rounded very easily but managed it anyway. What I was wondering though is that what have people now done with the 2 holes in the boot where the rack bolts were?

Why not just put a couple of new short bolts in the holes, or just block them with a gob of silicon ?

I've ordered 2 rubber grommets which should do the job :)

Is it worth trying to sell the spare tyre and rack?

Rack probably not but if the wheel and tyre are good, yes worth selling.

Well I can't think of any downsides to it. The wheel carrier is too small to actually allow me to swap a wheel over so if I have a passenger I'm screwed. The car is also alot lighter!

The big hole in the middle I sealed with good quality gaffer tape trimmed in a circle and stuck both sides and other hole under the plastic oddments tray I used a nut and bolt and washers so the plastic nut that secures the tray still fits.

I’ve decided to put my spare wheel carrier back on I’ve been cleaning it up this week and I’m sticking a new spare tyre on the wheel. The reason I’m doing it is because there was a thread on here where some one got a hole that the puncture gunk cans could not seal.
Knowing my luck that’s the sort of thing that would happen to me and after waiting for the RAC last week in the freezing cold to come out for a water problem I thought I can do with out that regarding a puncture so it’s going back on.

Having just read through this thread again, just to clarify that a spare wheel and tyre has never been a testable item on the M.O.T. test ever in the 40 years I've been testing, APART from the security of the spare wheel and carrier.

What I can't understand then is why my diso failed on the spare for being under minimum limit last year.
And to answer @Gremlins question, "because the tester was an idiot and didn't know what he was talking about."

Tony.

I just don't see the point in removing the spare tyre from your Zed ,unless your doing track days and sprint circuits events, which I'm sure a lot off you aren't,my daily driver is a e91 touring which I took off those awful run flat oem tyres, and replaced with normal every day tyres,I carry a sos kit all the while, but when I'm going long distances or have plane or ferry to catch I always put in a spare tyre, wheel brace and bottle jack, ide rather be safe, than sorry.

Luckily I was solo when one of my tyres came off the bead, so it could sit on the passenger seat. Otherwise it would have been hidden in the nearest hedge and collected later on that day.

A word of warning though about getting your passenger to carry it on their lap (assuming you are that incosiderate). There was a BBC news article about this very scenario in a Z3, where someone spotted a bulge on a road wheel and fitted the spare and put the road wheel on the passengers lap. The tyre burst and the passenger died of internal injuries. They didn't think about letting the tyre pressure down before hand. OK, this is pretty extreme, but it's stupid for other reasons such as the passenger air bag deploying.
