Anyone swapped out their instrument cluster for a replacement unit from the same model with similar miles - is it straight forward plug and play or is there more to it than that?

Not as simple as it sounds, the coding plug from your duff unit will need to be put in your replacement to show the correct mileage of your car. If you dont it will show the mileage of the doner car and a tamper dot to indicate its not the correct mileage being displayed. It will always show the higher mileage if there is a mismatch between the cluster and the cars computer. Old threads on here if you search a bit for further guidance.

Of course it may be the coding plug only that you need to replace keeping your own cluster. The caveats mentioned by colb above still apply, however. I think you will have a tamper dot anyway because the recorded mileage is stored in ore than one place in the car and conflicts are inevitable.
