I changed the rear discs and pads on my 2.8 today. All went well but, off side back plate needs replacing. Research tells me I either remove the hub and replace the rear wheel bearing (or rather I pay my mechanic to do it) or I use the cut method as documented on here. What have others done?

For the price of a bearing, suggest do the job proper!

it’s the cost of replacing that’s the issue?
If not doing it yourself you will likely have to foot the cost. My garage was not at all interested in doing this "bodge" (their words not mine).

Probably because they preferred charging £400 for the job rather than £100?

Exactly.

Just cut the backplate across the narrowest part, 'thread' it around the hub flange and bolt it on. You can either MIG weld it across the cut, or make up a small plate that can be riveted on before you bolt it on. Either way, it's a perfectly good repair.

The 'proper' way is all well and good but that's assuming the driveshaft hasn't rusted solid into the hub flange. Getting that apart is a whole world of expensive pain.
