Insurance companies condemn most cars these days
Overheating or an over zealous M.O.T. tester I would think. If I remember right every one Andy has broken has been the 1.8 or 1.9 4 cyl engined cars?

Where as in the "old" days corrosion was what used to kill cars, nowadays it's electronics which do the job.

Neither can I to be honest mate, but there's a breaker on Ebay who's got dozens of them with insurance company reference numbers on them.

As you've mentioned me I'll add my thoughts.
Usually what causes a 1.9 to get broken for parts is a head gasket/overheating fault. The larger engines are less prone, but still suffer the age related faults of suspension parts, rusting of sills, front wings, rear archs and wear and tear of steering wheel, seat bolsters, roof (therefore watertightness) - causing cosmetic concerns - plus age related stone chips, parking dings, kerbed wheels, dents here and there etc. Suddenly when an MOT picks up on brakes, CO2 emissions, tyres and the above a car is worth less than the repair bill (or too close to bother).
Not everyone loves the Z3 as much as people on here.
Many people want more modern cars with parking sensors, built in Sat Nav etc etc.

I don't touch damaged cars, too much hassle
That's a fact I often highlight too Andy, especially when it comes to the dreaded M.O.T. Somehow I suspect people look at a 6 cyl car as being "worth" doing up more than a 4 potter. And I mean NO disrespect by saying that.

In the case of my first Z3 it was the cost of sorting out rusty panels being way more than the car was worth. The low value of Z3s really doesn't help in making the decision either. Mine needed new sills and then a complete respray as the paint wasn't very good generally. It was also a basic bog standard 2.0 so wouldn't have commanded a good price even if it was in decent condition.
Simple economics, plus I still had the Z4 & MINI at the time so seemed the easiest way forwards.

Scarcity will help, but I really don't see non ///M models reaching a premium any time in the forseeable future. Even the prices of the ///Ms have been sporadic the last few years. If you wanna make money from a Z3, keep your eyes out for a decent low mileage Coupe.
