I got my Z4 at the end of August last year and ever since then for one reason or another the ashtray lid has been open since then.
Well today it was finally closed and can stay closed as I got around to installing two ignition fed power plugs for my HUD and Dash cam.
The first thing I did soon after getting it was to install an Aux cable into the rear of the head unit to power my Mp3 player (iPod etc.) To get the head unit out you have to remove the air vent above it by pressing down to clips which retain it in position.
The head unit is held in place by 2 screws. The cable connects into one of the block connectors on the rear of the unit. Easy job. I mounted the business end of the cable on the centre console within reach of a short cable length of the Mp3 player.
Today's job was to get shut of this mess,
So I removed the glove box (6 self tappers) and lowered the cover under it, 2 more screws. Then you have lots of room to work.
I used two of these cables from eBay,

1 I removed from the Z3 and 1 which I bought to fit in my Touareg (but never got round to doing) I cut the old one down to about 12" and grafted it onto the other one which in turn was cut right down to reach the fuse box where I'd installed an Add-a Fuse into an ignition fed fuse port.
It turned out to be the standard blade fuse size, not the micro one. With it installed into the fuse box I connected the power wire to the cig lighter sockets wire and earthed the return onto the steel work by the fuse box. Next job was to secure the 2 plugs and all the wires to prevent rattles and chaffing.
Lastly, I refitted the glove box and under cover, Oh and closed the bloody ashtray.
