The extracts I attached were from the Supplementary manual 11/97 print. If you have a later model there may be some minor differences as

Optical Functional display is a fancy way of saying LED. On the version referred to in the extracts the LED incorporates a spring loaded button which when depressed sends a pulse signal to the control box and then returns to its original position. It is not uncommon for the button to fail and the spring flies out (been there got the tee shirt). If yours is rigid then it may well be the spring is missing.
